Operation
- The CHO Homes program was transitioned from the Homes for Special Care program in 2021. In the past, Special Care program was administered by the Ministry of Health(MOH) and was established in 1964. It provides housing and support services to people with a serious mental illness. The program encourages community living by offering a housing alternative to hospital care.
- In 2021, the operation of the Recipient’s home was no longer be administered under the Homes for Special Care Program and will instead fall under the CHO program.
- CHO is a supportive housing program for people with serious mental illness. CHO strives to achieve best practices in supportive housing. The program is intended to assist Tenants by providing appropriate housing and support services to achieve and maintain stability in a home that is safe and affordable. The program takes a recovery based approach and provides access to support services both in the CHO Home and in the community, which will aim to improve and/or stabilize peoples’ physical and mental health, foster independence, and enhance participation and integration into the community.
- Most residents are discharged from hospital and can live a “normal” life with some assisted living. Residents are independent and are free to come and go from the homes and must be able to live co-operatively with others. Most residents are long term residents.
- The CHO program focuses on person-centred flexible services, reflecting the individual and changing needs of Tenants. A recovery-based environment in CHO Homes includes supporting Tenants to be empowered to be active participants in their own planning and ensuring the opportunity to make individual choices.
- The homes are exempt from the Land Lord Tenant Act 2006 and the Retirement Home Act R.S.O. 2007. If the Home is the owner's principal residence the operation will be Income Tax Exempt as per the Federal Tax Code.
- The operators are responsible for providing board and lodging for the residents as well as providing supervision of medication and arranging medical appointments for the residents. The homes are required to have a staff member on the site 24 hours a day.
